Peggy, thank you so much for writing. I love hearing from someone who knew my mother, and it touches me to think of her showing Jesse's picture at Dunkin' Donuts! I miss her so much, and I miss Jesse with a visceral tug every single day.
Thanks again for reading the book and your good wishes--I am happy to tell you that it is now on the curricula of two colleges and future teachers will be reading Jesse's story.
Love,
Marianne

Dear Marianne
I am from Newton, MA in fact know your sister Lindy through a mutual friend Irene Gallo Murphy
and also knew your nice Mom through another old friend Jeana Vachon. I truly enjoyed your book
especially with references to 'the Lake' and chubs
and others...knowing for sure who they really were - But I especially enjoyed reading about Jesse your dear son - that I had heard about over the years from your Mom; even saw pictures when I'd run into her at Dunkin Donuts!! She was very proud of him and of you and Chris - knowing the courage all of you showed. The book brought out the happiness you all shared as well. I cried and also laughed reading the incredible book...and at times got angry 'at the system'
Good for you for hanging in there for Jesse and others - reminding us all, as one of your Nannies did -to see the child. The Jesse Cooper Foundation is certainly being added to my list of charitable donations. I know I'll never look at a kite in the future without thinking of Jesse.
I hope this book brings you great, well deserved success. Good Luck and God Bless. Peg Cleary

Dear Norma,

It's funny that you mention my mother--the mother character in CHRISTINA is fully based on her. She was such a force of nature, I can't improve on her fictionally! I am enjoying writing a comedic piece; however to go back over the awkward moments of being thirteen is as uncomfortable as when I first experienced it.

I wish you well in your future writing.

love,
marianne

Dear Marianne,
Thank-you for your comments and feedback. I do write a journal and so will start with a letter to Cristina and go from there. One thing I forgot to mention was your writing about your Mother she had a great sense of humour, that is what I have found has helped me these days is to try to laugh a little more and even there is see Cristina having a giggle with me.
If you have time visit mem.com and there you will find a memorial of Cristina Martin, and yes she was astonishing as the title of your your new book. I look forward to reading it one day.
Take care and have a wonderful day!
Love, Norma

Dear Norma,
You express so beautifully the emotions of grief and loss. From seven years out, I can say, the pain doesn't go away, it shifts, so that now you almost miss the visceral agony of the first days because your memories were that much stronger.
Maybe you could write Cristina a letter and find your way into the book that way.
By the way, I am writing a fiction book right now, a coming of age comedy about the early 60's. Title: CHRISTINA THE ASTONISHING!
As I am sure your Cristina was, Norma.
I am swimming every day in the bay I am so lucky to live near. Isak Dineson said: there is nothing that salt water doesn't cure: sweat, tears, or the sea.
Love to you, too,
